| Shiloh | town in SW Camden County. Inc. 1883, but no long active in municipal affairs. Daniel Billet settled there before 1694, and the name "Billet's Bridge" is still known locally at the site of a bridge that he built. Named Danson's Manor after 1696, when 3,640 acres were granted to John Danson, son-in-law of Governor John Archdale. Danson never lived there, but his heirs held the property until 1739. In the middle of the eighteenth century, the place came to be called Mill Town for a group of watermills erected on a bluff overlooking the Pasquotank River. Shortly after 1800, the local Baptist church (organized 1729), the oldest Baptist church in the state, changed its name to Shiloh, and the name came to be applied to the community. |
